Hong Community Workshops for Students and Teachers
In 2015, the OzAsia Festival will place a special focus on the arts and culture from Indonesia. It will be the largest showcase of Indonesian performing arts held in Australia and includes a program of theatre, dance, film, visual arts as well as communityand cultural events. Information about the Festival’s program can be found on the website.
Of particular mention is the Hong Community. The Hong Community are a unique collective from Bandung, West Java, who have researched more than 1,300 traditional games played by children from more than 200 different communities across the Indonesian archipelago. In particular, the Hong Community have researched the heritage of games which are particular to different cultural groups and directly related to the cultural values across different regions in Indonesia including Papua, Sulawesi, Maluku, Java, Sumatera and Kalimantan to name a few.
During their one-week residency, the Hong Community will facilitate a number of workshops for upper-primary students, teaching them about traditional Indonesian games including the history and community value of the games. The workshops will be held outdoors (with indoor weather contingency) around the Adelaide Festival Centre. During the workshops, students have hands-on experience learning about craft-making from the natural environment and then playing games as the reward. The workshops will also introduce students to some traditional snacks such as boiled banana and herbal tea.
Each workshop can hold up to 100 students as there will be 1 Hong Community member for each group of 10 students. The workshops will be free-of-charge and preference for booking will be given to schools with demonstrated interest in Indonesian engagement.
In addition to the workshops for school students, the Hong Community will facilitate a 2-hour teacher masterclass for up to 50 teachers to ensure the experience of Indonesian games can be shared with wider school groups.
INTAN would like to offer four lucky Members the opportunity to have their attendance at the Hong Community Teacher Masterclass sponsored. Details on how to apply can be downloaded here.
Information about school bookings and registration details for the professional learning workshop can be found in the downloads.
