Kendari Study Tour
Whether you are a primary or secondary teacher, the administrator of tuition programs, or you are researching education (or all three) you will find something to grab your imagination in this five-day working visit to a school in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi.
Organised by the Balai Bahasa Indonesia (ACT) the tour will take you to a rapidly developing corner of Indonesia that is little-known to foreigners. Over five days you will meet students and teachers at a Kendari secondary school, with the option of visits to a primary school for tour members interested in primary-level education. Tour members will observe classes, teach a class (probably, but not necessarily, an English practice class), engage in joint activities with teachers and students, and practise Bahasa Indonesia whether elementary or advanced. Command of Bahasa Indonesia will be an advantage but is not at all essential.
The tour assembles in Bali on 14 January 2017, for an evening of introductions and orientation. Flying direct from Bali to Kendari the following day, the tour group will stay together in a middle-level hotel not far from the school. For five days tour members will interact intensively with the local school community.
In addition to formal group activities, there will be considerable flexibility for individuals to devise their own interactions with local teachers and students. There will be evening sessions of discussion, de-briefing and language study at the hotel, plus a one-day opportunity for sight-seeing or leisure in Kendari. After five days the group returns to Bali and from there tour members make their own onward travel arrangements. The tour is scheduled to fit into a window of summer school-holiday time common to all states and territories across Australia.
The tour fee of $1,990 covers one night’s accommodation with meals and an orientation program in Denpasar, return air travel between Denpasar and Kendari, five nights middle-level hotel accommodation in Kendari with breakfast and lunch every day plus dinners on the first night and last night, transport between hotel and school in Kendari, and the services of a tour leader for the duration of the tour.
The tour fee does NOT cover travel between Australia and the tour start/end point in Denpasar, evening meals on January 16, 17 and 18 of the stay in Kendari, insurance and medical treatment, or any meals-drinks-transport other than specified in the detailed Tour itinerary.
This is your chance to get under the skin of school education in Indonesia by getting to know the everyday working life of a school and its exotic, off-the-beaten-track city environment.
